b. 1919, London
Philosopher
Peter Frederick Strawson is a major philosopher, who has taught at Oxford since 1948. He became Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy in 1968. Strawson has published numerous articles and books principally in the areas of metaphysics, logic, epistemology and freedom.
His broad approach has been to suggest that certain traits in ‘ordinary language’ provide better ways of understanding phenomena than those offered by formal philosophical logic. Early criticism of Russell’s theory of ‘descriptions’ through this approach led to his ‘solution’ of the mind-body problem in Individuals: An Essay in Descriptive Metaphysics. The ‘descriptive’ rather than ‘speculative’ metaphysics which he developed in this work led him to later reappraise Kant’s epistemology in The Bounds of Sense. More recently, he has argued against scepticism and reductive naturalism and has published an introduction to philosophy, Analysis and Metaphysics, that attempts to understand philosophy as an analysis of the relation between concepts. Peter Strawson can fairly be regarded as one of the most technically sophisticated imaginative and inspiring philosophers of his time. His work combines a high degree of technical analysis with an imaginative grasp of the wider issues involved; an unusual if not unparalleled gift, leading to an unusual if not unparalleled contribution to that combination of technical rigour and wide imagination so necessary to a rapidly shifting philosophical outlook.
